Cyber-Bullying at it's Best

I hadn't planned on this being the topic of my next post. Honestly, I didn't think I would think to comment on this topic on here but here goes:

-Start Rant-

Alright, so most of you who are reading this have heard of Topix.com or visited or even been on it.

Topix.com is a place where people can come to talk about their communities and what's going on while also sharing opinions and suggestions to better the town we live in. Sounds harmless right? Maybe even productive? Exactly. That's what it should be. That was the design. However, (of course) some immature children got a hold of it and used it for wrong. Lately, teenagers have been using the site to post anonymously about other people. Posting mean things that may or may not be true. The school administration obviously caught wind of it and addressed the student body about it and calling it cyber bullying. The ones that are using the site are claiming that it is not bullying, it's free speech and expression. So, being the smartalic I am, I'm going to give the definitions of both of these:

cyber bullying: the use of the Internet and related technologies to harm other people, in a deliberate, repeated, and hostile manner. (Found on Wikipedia)

free speech: is the freedom to speak freely without censorship. (Found on Wikipedia)

So yes. It is technically free speech. Behind a closed door. The people posting these horrible things that are directed at specific people are using fake screen names that can't be traced because they don't want to actually put their name on their opinions. If you're gonna post something, you better mean it and you should have the (figurative) balls to admit to it and support it.

My friend is gay. Which is socially unacceptable to some people (already stated my feelings there). He was, to no surprise, posted about on topix. People posted horrible and malicious things about about him for no real purpose. Now his friends jumped in and supported him (using their full names) but it doesn't change the fact that he was being bullied by people he didn't know because of something that was his choice and not his problem.

I have never posted on Topix and I have only been on it a few times because I feel like the terrible people in this town have turned the site to trash. Its still a big deal if your name is found on Topix. But honestly, the site is nothing. Those peoples bullying attacks don't matter. If you feel that strongly, confront the person you have a problem with. Posting about it on a website is not going to solve anything and I personally hope it gets you in big trouble because it's bullying. Plain and simple.

-End Rant-
